What is
BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX®
Cosmetic is a trade name for Botulinum
toxin type A, being produced by a bacterium
call Clostridium botulinum. Believe
it or not, research with BOTOX®
Cosmetic goes back to the 1940’s with
a search for a vaccine against botulism.
In the 1960’s it was used to treat crossed
eyes and used today for headaches, neck
pain and abnormal muscle spasms.
Now, seventy countries use BOTOX®
Cosmetic and it has been endorsed by
the National Institute of Health since
1990.

How does
it work?
Normally, nerves
communicate to muscles to make them
contract by using a chemical transmitter
called acetylcholine. BOTOX®
Cosmetic works by blocking the nerve
from releasing acetylocholine relaxing
the muscle. When BOTOX®
Cosmetic is injected near a wrinkle
the muscle underneath relaxes and the
wrinkle disappears.
How do I
get BOTOX® Cosmetic?
BOTOX®
Cosmetic is injected into the affected
muscles with a very fine gauge (small)
needle. Some people report a minor
sting from the injection.
When does
it start to work, and for how long?
Results can be
seen as early as 3 to 7 days. Maximum
benefit is seen in 1 to 2 weeks.
Your first treatment may give you dramatic
results lasting usually 3 months.
Repeat injections can be given approximately
4 times a year. When you first notice
the relief beginning to fade you should
return for another treatment. This will
keep the dose smaller allowing you to
use BOTOX®
Cosmetic longer.
